Feature Wine: 2012 Meritage

Burrowing Owl's Meritage blend is our flagship wine. Our Meritage is truly "the best of the best" - percentages of the components in the blend vary from vintage to vintage but are always selected from what are deemed to be the best combination for the vintage and the finest expression of our terroir.

The 2012 Meritage features Cabernet Franc as the leading grape with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot contributing mouth-feel, extra length and complexity. The varieties were vinified and barrel aged separately for 18 months. During this period, we revisit the "assemblage" (blend) four separate times, constantly tweaking and changing the blend until we are satisfied we have found the best possible combination to represent the vintage. After 18 months, the components are combined and aged for another 3 months to integrate the blend and soften the final composition. After bottling, the wine is aged another year in a temperature controlled environment before its final release. Enjoy!

2012 Meritage Blend: Cabernet Franc 43%, Merlot 28%, Cabernet Sauvignon 20% and Petit Verdot 9%

Burrowing Owl Founder, Jim Wyse, named Entrepreneur of the Year!

On September 24th Jim Wyse was named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year™ in the Hospitality & Tourism Category (Pacific Region)!

The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year™ awards recognize outstanding individuals who have successfully turned their unique business vision into reality. Wyse’s vision was to craft world-class wines using environmentally sustainable viticulture and winemaking methods. “This award is a huge honour,” Wyse comments. “Starting a really unique business is always a big challenge because you need to have faith in yourself, but you also need to have faith that others will recognize the value of what you’re doing. We’re lucky that Canadians, and now people from around the world, have embraced the idea that making quality wine is good, but making quality wine while working in harmony with nature is even better.”

2015 Harvest Update

At time of writing this newsletter, our vineyard team has harvested some amazing Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot. President Chris Wyse confirmed that all indications are for 2015 to be a stellar vintage. The brix (amount of sugar in the grapes) at time of harvest has been excellent, and the grapes also reached optimal phenolic ripeness which contributes complexity to the flavours and structure of the wine. In the Okanagan Valley we are also lucky to have cool nights which has helped to maintain a nice balance between acid levels and ripeness in the grapes. Our first taste of the 2015 vintage will be in our Pinot Gris which will be released in Spring 2016.
