Feature Wine - 2013 Meritage

Burrowing Owl Estate Winery's flagship blend opens on aromas of cassis, red currant, burlap, roasted red pepper, chocolate, paprika and some pretty violet floral notes in the background along with a hit of toasty oak.

The palate is firmly structured with a full body and firm tannins and genuine intensity. There is toast and creamy oak, a mixture of red and black cherry, blueberry, black plum and some complexity added with baking spice and a little marzipan. It has the structure and flavours to age well, but you can also enjoy now paired with slow roasted lamb shoulder or beef Wellington.

A: Meritage rhymes with Heritage!

Did you know that Meritage is a made-up word created in the USA in 1988, and comes from the combination of the two words Merit & Heritage? Meritage is the North American name for a Bordeaux style blend made from a combination of at least 2 of the following varietals: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere.

The Sonora Room Restaurant

The Sonora Room Restaurant is open Thursdays through Sundays for dinner, and Fridays - Sundays for lunch until Saturday December 10th. Plus, there is still time to enjoy a group Christmas dinner with c0-workers or friends.

The Guest House

We are now taking bookings for late Fall 2016 or anytime in 2017!

Harvest Update

Karma & Rusty had a long and busy harvest this year... and what an amazing year it was! All of the grapes are now in, and our big reds benefited from extended "hang time" which allows for good phenolic ripening. The season started early and our whites - Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc  -  and all of our wines, are well on their way to another great vintage.Huge kudos go out to our "stellar cellar team" who once again put in long hours to ensure that only the best wines will be bottled under the Burrowing Owl label! Sincere thanks to all of you.
