Feature Wine - 2014 Cabernet Franc

The 2014 season presented the ideal profile for the production of intensely aromatic  and concentrated wines for both whites and reds. The dry and warm Spring favoured blossoming, and exceptional levels of heat during summer time provided for an even ripening. Finally, the beautiful late season gave us time to pick the grapes at will, when they had reached our optimum standards of maturity.

A ripe yet elegant nose showing a complex range of floral violet notes, five spice, sage, plum, black cherry and liquorice with a subtle hint of dark chocolate infused with orange zest. The palate is medium in body, elegant and refreshing with crisp acidity, soft round tannins and intense raspberry, plum, blackberry and spice on a long finish that shows some complex graphite minerality. Try with seared duck breast or chicken thighs grilled over charcoal. Rhys Pender, Master of Wine

New Solar Energy at Burrowing Owl

Burrowing Owl Proprietor Jim Wyse has always approached the winery with a visionary’s eagerness to do things differently – and better. 2016 is no different, and this year 3 new clusters of solar electric panels will be installed on the winery's property.

The first set will be installed on the roof of the new 7500 sq ft expansion to the cellar, while the 2nd set has now been installed on the roof of the winery's Oliver warehouse. These panels alone produce all the energy needed in the warehouse, thus reaching “zero carbon footprint” status. The warehouse will be the first facility in the South Okanagan region that is able to make this claim. This coming winter, 4 electric car charging stations will be installed which will have a large roof housing the 3rd and final set of panels. By the end of construction, the total contribution of solar energy at Burrowing Owl from all sources will be the equivalent of 220,000 kWh/year, which will offset carbon emissions by 115 tons/year.  For more information, click here.

Live from the Grapevine!

Harvest began for us at Burrowing Owl on Wednesday, September 7th with the teams out picking our Pinot Gris! The grapes are all sorted by hand and dropped into a pneumatic press for a very gentle extraction of the juice that captures and preserves the delicate, fresh, fruity flavours of the grapes.

The wine will be released in Spring 2017.
